Creating A Powerful Career Brand

Creating a powerful career brand is about building credibility and trust with your colleagues and senior leaders. However, it is also about learning how to be visible and staying top of mind.

In this week’s newsletter, global communication expert, Jessica Chen, and Lung Nien Lee, the Chairman of Citi Private Bank, South Asia, talk about building a powerful career brand at work.

Below is a small snippet of their entire conversation held on our Soulcast Media | LIVE show on LinkedIn to celebrate the launch of Jessica’s new book, “Smart, Not Loud: How to Get Noticed at Work for All the Right Reasons.” If you’d like to watch or listen to the entire interview, click below. On Career Branding

Jessica – I think for many of us, we sometimes reach a point in our work where the work feels manageable, but it’s not something we want to do long-term. So, the question is: how can we break out of this cycle, especially if there are other areas of work that interest us?

In “Smart, Not Loud” I talk about building your Quiet Capital Framework, which is a strategic way of identifying, creating, and pitching the kind of projects you want to do to accelerate your career growth.

This approach is smart because you are controlling how people perceive you. In fact, we don’t need decades of experience to start. Here are the three things to keep in mind, which I share in Part 2 of the book:

  • Shape your career brand so you control the narrative of your work. It means finding your differentiating factor. This is where your interests align with what you’re good at. The work also doesn’t feel draining.
  • Build credibility so you gain trust and respect from others. In most corporate workplaces, credibility is earned and re-earned. In Chapter 5, I share how you can strategically do this, including keeping your credibility intact when you have to engage in tricky conversations with your manager or your team.
  • Advocate for yourself so you can get what you want. This is one of the most important chapters because at the end of the day, you have to ask for what you want and the things you care about. It’s why I share exactly how you can do that, including circling back, celebrating your wins, and turning down requests to protect your time. In short, I called it ACCT.
In fact, it’s important to remember these three things to keep yourself top of mind for bigger opportunities.

Lung – Yes, when you think of a career brand, what do you think of? Is this person credible? When you speak, do people listen? Do you have the authority to say what you’re saying? And a lot of it has to do with your track record. When you want to build a brand, you need to do your job and do it well.

You also have to be authentic in how you behave. You need to think about your attitude. Is it a positive attitude, or do you bring negative energy?

When you walk into the room, what do people say about you? Will they be listening to you, or will they just switch off? You’ve got to say what you mean and mean what you say.

Remember, people tend to gravitate towards positive people. So, a positive attitude and trust are important. Everything is linked together to build a powerful career brand.
