Board of Communicators – Meet Kelsey Moore

We are thrilled to introduce you to one of our Board of Communicators members, Kelsey Moore. We spoke with Kelsey about why she is excited to be on our Board Of Communicators and her coaching approach.

1. What’s your approach to helping folks improve their communications confidence?

Previous clients have appreciated my relational, tailored, and engaging approach because they feel confident and comfortable throughout the coaching process. During our initial meeting, we will spend time assessing your current communication concerns and set achievable goals. Then, using social scientific evidence and experience-based principles, we will create a plan to reach these goals. Depending upon your needs, we will implement speaking, writing, or thought exercises to ensure progress. Clients have also reported that our sessions are more enjoyable and productive than they anticipated! Overall, this individualized approach, coupled with evidence- and experience-based principles, ensures that you will see results fast. Whether you are looking to find your voice, strengthen your confidence, or develop your personal style, practicing communication skills doesn’t have to be stressful. Instead, it is my goal to make this process an empowering and enjoyable experience for
you!

2. Why do you think communications is so important for career success?

Communication is the means through which we share ideas, build relationships, manage conflict, motivate employees, and persuade investors. Additionally, the success of our communication depends entirely upon how clearly, accurately, and powerfully we convey our message to our audience. Though communication is a fundamental need, effective communication is not a basic ability. For instance, competent communicators are aware of their intentional and unintentional messages (e.g., you may be communicating disinterest to your clients without realizing it); they understand that communication is irreversible; they recognize the role of contextual norms when speaking to an audience. In an increasingly technology-driven, globalized, and diverse world, communication becomes even more complex. Thus, there are considerable advantages to receiving professional communications coaching. Finally, the tangible benefit of effective communications is compelling. For instance, the Harvard Business Review found that the annual productivity costs of poor communication are roughly $26,000 per employee. For a typical American company of 500 employees, this averages to over 10 million dollars per year. This data indicates that by increasing your communications competence and confidence, you can expect significant monetary results.

3. In your experience, why do people struggle with communications?

Communication is simply a skill and learning a new skill requires knowledge, motivation, and practice. My job is to help you with all three, but especially with setting goals (knowledge) and creating a plan to reach them (practice). Many people struggle with communication anxiety and nervousness. In fact, various studies have shown an estimated 75-80% of the population has public speaking anxiety and for many, it is their greatest fear. While some anxiety is normal, negative past experiences, cultural factors, personality elements (hello, introverts!), and more can only worsen this anxiety. If this is you, we can work together to increase your communication confidence. Just think about what you could accomplish if you faced one of your greatest fears! Some people do not have anxiety, but simply don’t know where to begin. By learning concepts such as how to analyze an audience, why you should outline your ideas, and what body language best connects with listeners, you can jumpstart your process, boost your communication confidence, and achieve more in your personal and professional life!

4. What do you love most working with clients on speaking?

In short, I love seeing clients’ lives and businesses transform when they strengthen their communications confidence! Communication continues to be a large source of anxiety, which can prevent you from accomplishing your goals, such as negotiating for a higher salary, building effective cross-cultural teams, or reaching influential investors for your startup. When we work together to remove any obstacles to these goals, I find that clients consistently earn more money, build better relationships, produce more successful companies, and live happier, more empowered lives. Who doesn’t love seeing that every day?

5. Please share your communications growth story.

I started speaking in front of large audiences when I was 8 years old. As the opportunities to speak, coach, and teach grew over the next 20 years, I received feedback from listeners that they wanted more of my story – more of “me” – in my talks. Public speaking is already a test of confidence and vulnerability, so sharing more about your personal connection to a topic is even more difficult. In response to this feedback, I pursued improv training, began sharing personal examples when teaching and coaching, and recently started preparing for stand-up comedy sets. The results of this growth are undeniable! My audience can better connect with me as a speaker, my confidence has increased in all areas of life, and my relational communication is more authentic than ever. I have no doubt that if I can improve my communications confidence, you can as well! I am so excited to begin this journey with you and share in your future growth and success.
