On The Power Of The Pause
Chuck – We live in a world where people are talking too fast, they’re saying too much, and they’re speaking sometimes for too long.
This results in information overload, leading to listening fatigue.
Consider the implications in a conversation. There are two sides. Somebody is communicating, somebody is trying to listen. According to science, 60% of our workday is spent communicating, yet only 25% of what is communicated is actually understood. Even before we’ve sat down to work, we’re already at a deficit because we’re comprehending less than what is intended.
The power of the pause is giving the listener time to catch up in a very crowded, dissonant feeling world.
On Emotional Intelligence
Chuck – We don’t know each other’s temperaments. We don’t know what triggers other people. When you’re working, you have to be at your best. Well, what happens when you’re not? Because there will be some days you aren’t at your best.
People don’t want to work with other people who are ill-tempered. Emotional intelligence is the foundation for learning how to stay calm when people are pushing your buttons.
Emotions drive us, and our behavior reflects that. Your job is to build credibility, trust, and respect, which is often referred to as the CTR factor.
You do that through your behavior. By treating people with respect and by delivering on your commitments.
