Presentation Nerves

Jessica – I wish there was something to take or drink, and you could get rid of all those nerves and feel like a Superwoman or Superman.

But what I really think goes a long way is to sit there for maybe a minute or two in silence and just breathe before you go up. This is so effective because it calms your brain, your heart, and maybe the butterflies going on in your stomach.

And while you’re doing this, you are telling yourself, wait a second, I did practice this. I know this. I remember and trust myself. Instead, you want to say, no, I got this.

On Speaking Up In Meetings

Jessica – Just because we’re smart and work hard, doesn’t mean people are going to notice it. I think for people who are introverted, it’s about being strategic. It’s knowing when to speak up, knowing how to chime in so that people listen because we know that there are very loud people perhaps on our team.

If I’m in a meeting and I know it’s incredibly important for me to say something, I will challenge myself, and that’s the key: I will challenge myself to try to speak up a little bit earlier in the meeting versus waiting until the very end.

I do this because I noticed, and this is maybe a trial and error for you, your own sense of what works best. But I’ve realized that if I wait too long, I might convince myself to say nothing at all.
