BOARD OF COMMUNICATORS – MEET Jeff Cavallo

We are thrilled to introduce you to one of our Board of Communicators members, Jeff Cavallo.

Jeff’s passion for communications is why we know he can help anyone improve their communications confidence.

We spoke with Jeff about why he is excited to be on our Board Of Communicators and wanted to share our conversations with you below!

1. WHAT’S YOUR APPROACH TO HELPING FOLKS IMPROVE THEIR COMMUNICATIONS CONFIDENCE?

Similar to building a house, a strong foundation is vital. Remember, any skill can be taught and learned. Therefore, public speaking is a skill that can be learned, improved, and perfected. Furthermore, acquiring the skills needed to enhance communications confidence uses proven research, authentic habits, storytelling, and simplicity.

2. WHY DO YOU THINK COMMUNICATIONS IS SO IMPORTANT FOR CAREER SUCCESS?

I think communications is critically important for any relationship to flourish: personal or professional. Relationship and commonality building, being relevant, and adding value are the hallmarks of effective and productive communication. With that being said, communications involve both listening and speaking. Beautifully articulated words can miss the mark if the message is not poignant and relevant to the individual or audience. Being able to communicate in a clear, concise, direct, honest, and impactful manner will enhance career success. Research suggests words make up 7% of the communicated message. Incorporating body language, tone of voice, facial expressions, hand gestures, and storytelling techniques are some ways to improve interpersonal, professional communication, and career success.

3. IN YOUR EXPERIENCE, WHY DO PEOPLE STRUGGLE WITH COMMUNICATIONS?

Public speaking ranks high in the fear category. In some polls, the fear of public speaking is #1. Certainly, things can go wrong while communicating one-on-one, in a small group, in-person, during a video conference, and on stage. Most people place emphasis on or fear the negative. In essence, “what if ” this happens or that happens while I am speaking. Negative thinking creates stress and angst, thus decreasing positive self-talk and the likelihood of success. I provide a simple and effective analogy relative to a balance beam and a personal story about a speech I gave almost thirty years ago in front of seventy-five people that resonates with those that struggle with communications (which is all of us).

4. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST WORKING WITH CLIENTS ON SPEAKING?

I love learning about each client and their story. Listening intently to what the client is looking for as a public speaker or communicator is critical for developing a win-win. Each client is unique and wants/needs different things. The beauty of communications starts with the foundational and fundamental elements of good communication and using the uniqueness of each person to effectively deliver an impactful message by elevating confidence. I love watching a client transform into an engaging, dynamic, purposeful, highly-effective, and confident speaker.

5. PLEASE SHARE YOUR COMMUNICATIONS GROWTH STORY.

I feared speaking in front of people throughout elementary, middle, high school, and college. I always felt ill-prepared and did not want to mess up. As previously stated, I had to give a prepared speech to seventy-five people about the benefits of aerobic and anaerobic exercise. The speech may go down as the worst speech ever delivered. It was horrible. I was so nervous, my heart was pounding, I was sweating profusely, I tried to hold my notes, but my hands were shaking too much, and to make matters worse, my voice was quivering. I was embarrassed and humiliated. On my way home, I made a commitment to making drastic changes and improving my confidence and public speaking skills. Fast forward almost thirty years, I teach the finer points of public speaking and how to build power presentations in-person and remotely to global audiences. Also, I have written a public speaking manual that simplifies the process. I believe in lifelong learning, embracing challenges, and ongoing growth as a communicator.
